1932

On May 28, 1932, the last gap in the Afsluitdijk is closed. This transforms the former Zuiderzee into the IJsselmeer, making the construction of polders possible.

1936

In 1936, the construction of the dike around the area known as the Noordoostpolder begins. This dike forms the basis of the reclamation and makes it possible to later use the area for agriculture and habitation.

1940

The construction of the dikes is completed in 1940. This starts the reclamation process, where the water is slowly pumped away to make the land suitable for use.

1942

On September 9, 1942, the Noordoostpolder officially dries up. The land area of the Netherlands expands, and the new polder is prepared for development and agriculture. This milestone is seen as an important step in the growth of the Netherlands.

1945

During the Second World War, despite the German occupation, work on the polder continues. The Germans recognize the importance of fertile land and support the reclamation. After the liberation in 1945, work on the infrastructure is accelerated. Shortly thereafter, the first farming families settle in the polder.

1947

From 1947, the government encourages the settlement of farming families in the Noordoostpolder. The new agricultural area plays an important role in the food production of the Netherlands, and farmers are actively encouraged to cultivate the land.

Noordoostpolder

This land, which was wild and empty!

1959

The construction of the Poldertoren is completed in 1959. This 65.30 meter high tower becomes an iconic beacon of the Noordoostpolder and symbolizes the completion of the pioneering work in the area.

2009

After years of renovation and redevelopment, the Poldertoren is reopened in 2009. The tower then serves as a cultural center and commemorates the pioneering work that brought the Noordoostpolder into being. But the Michelin-starred restaurant Sonoy also establishes itself in the tower.

2013

Due to problems and sky-high costs, the Poldertoren is closed by the municipality of Noordoostpolder in 2013, and the tower is only occasionally open for tourism.

2026

After years of discussions about what should happen to the iconic tower, a complete renovation of the Poldertoren will start in 2025. All causes of problems will be restored and resolved, and the tower will be prepared for sleeping in. Hotel-Restaurant-Grandcafé 't Voorhuys has realized 4 room suites and 2 tower rooms on 3 floors. The tower is ready to welcome you as a guest. Stay overnight and dream in higher spheres. Overlooking the unique landscape that is the Noordoostpolder. An experience never to forget.
